AI-Use Policy: It’s Time to Have One.
Last Updated: 2026-08-24
Inspired by the growing proliferation of AI-tools in daily life and the siren-song (marketing copy) of How Easy and Productive These Tools Are, we here at Building Block Legal have decided to make a plan: to metaphorically wax our ears and tie to the mast to survive these increasingly dangerous and uncharted waters. We have seen many examples of people “leaping into the water”, even innocently, getting hurt when AI-use infiltrates their processes unchecked.
Building Block Legal, PLLC AI-Use Policy:
The thesis of every document and project shall be written by a human.
The outline of every document and project shall be written by a human.
AI art shall be avoided - No image, video, or sound will be AI generated. If something is accidentally used, once discovered, best efforts will be made to remove it. We shall strive to find human talent and to credit and to compensate them fairly for their creative works.
LLM outputs may be used for preliminary research purposes, however, these are not trusted sources and must be independently verified. The inherent friction and joy-of-discovery in research is valuable. Tangents and unfamiliar ideas lead to improved and holistic awareness.
LLM outputs may be used for first-pass drafting purposes, however a human needs to be able to define, and describe the inclusion of, all words and ideas in a document. Finding one’s own writing voice is a valuable process that only occurs over many many drafts.
All outward facing content shall be reviewed by a human to ensure that it is coherent, clearly communicated, and valuable.
We shall require all third party contractors to disclose their AI use practices, policies, and safeguards. We shall make a final determination to proceed with their products and services based on whether their disclosure aligns with our own polices.
Aspirational: All documents shall contain links to primary sources for any facts or assertions included therein.
Aspirational: Every dollar spent on AI tools, or hourly equivalent, shall be offset with donations towards pro-human, carbon-reduction, or water conservation projects.
Aspirational: Encourage others to draft their own AI-Use Policies, and other self-constraining guidelines. Constraints lead to creativity!
